Holy Land Hurrah!

posted 30 Aug 2009 15:42 by Tony Griffiths

The booking forms have all been completed, deposits have been paid and so we are now able to start thinking about the things we want to do whist away in Israel. I know it will be a time of both spiritual renewal and delightful time away with friends. There will be a meeting after Christmas to meet up with all those who are going, answer questions and to do some preparations of the places we will be visiting. Pat Pearson will be the link person and thanks for all the work she has done so far.

St. Oswald Window

posted 30 Aug 2009 15:39 by Tony Griffiths

St. Oswald window will be installed on Tuesday. What a great leaving present for the parish. Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the cost of the window and I know it will be a beautiful addition to the church. Jane Gray has used her skills with glass to add an image of the parish patron. I am sure it will be appreciated by all who look at it.

Moving on.

All I can do is apologise for there being no firm details as to my successor! It will, more than likely, be the priest I have already met but it has still not been confirmed.

What is in place is the list of priests who will be celebrating masses here for the weekends of September. Fr John Wright will be here 5th-6th September. Fr Gerald McGuinness and Fr Frank McManus will be celebrating 12th-13th & 26th-27th September and Fr. Chris Lightbound will be here 19th-20th. I am sure that you will welcome them as you do with all visiting priests and those who are ministers of Word and Eucharist will support them with your presence.

I will produce a single newsletter for September to cover the parish diary. Any other items of information will be announced at the weekend masses by Deacons Steve and Joe.

Church Gardens

The next project is the covering of the graveyard. The gravel has been ordered and all we need now is some good weather, a couple of wheelbarrows and a few able-bodied parishioners to spend a few hours shifting. My aim is to have the grounds looking presentable for when Fr. Marianus arrives.

Moving on

posted 19 Jul 2009 03:51 by Tony Griffiths

A few weeks ago Bishop Brian asked me to move from Oswestry. After a few days to consider his request I said yes and so in early September I will be taking up a new challenge in Birkenhead. I will be the new parish priest for three parishes; Our Lady’s, Cavendish Street, St. Paul’s and Holy Cross. Up to ten years ago there were five priests looking after these parishes and now I will be there on my own. Such is the shortage of available priests.

Birkenhead holds no great fears for me. I taught in the town for fourteen years and was an assistant priest in the town for two years. Our Lady’s is one of the oldest parishes in the diocese and the place for many large diocesan gatherings. Holy Cross is a parish without a church. The Bishop reluctantly closed down the church two years ago so the community now celebrates mass in the church of St. Paul’s on the Ford Estate. St. Paul’s is one of the most deprived of parishes in term of employment and prospects yet the Church flourishes there and is also the home of the Children’s Society. There are two primary schools, the option to be involved in St. Mary’s College, and hospital ministry at Arrowe Park Hospital. I think I will be kept busy.

Today’s Gospel is very relevant to this move! At ordination, the priest puts his hands into the hands of the Bishop and promises obedience. He can then be invited to go wherever the Bishop sees a need. It is promise not to be taken lightly and one that can mean the life of a wanderer; putting down roots in one parish only to be asked to move on to another community.

I have loved my time here at St. Oswald’s. You have taught me to calm down and enjoy the slow pace that comes from a largely rural parish. I have thrived on the challenges of the school and will take many happy memories of the school community. I have had the joy of Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals as well as celebrating the Seasons for the past three and a half years (This is the longest time I have ever spent in a parish.)

There are still six weeks before I depart so I hope to spend them packing, preparing for my new adventure and saying goodbye to the parish (and I hate goodbyes!)

I will be succeeded by Fr Marianus Kullu, a priest of the Diocese of Didrugarth, India, who has been working in the Holy Spirit parish in Marple. He is gentle man with great pastoral care.

In this difficult time for all concerned I invite you pray for the Bishop. He took this decision in light of his need to care for all the diocese. Pray also for Fr. Marianus and the community he is leaving behind in Marple. Pray also for me as I start sowing the seeds of faith in another parish. Pray for the folk in Birkenhead who will have to get used to my odds way. But most importantly pray for the parish of St. Oswald that it may be a community open to change and ready to welcome a new chapter in the life of the parish.

I have been in touch with Pax Travel and they have made a note of our dates and proposed itinerary. I await a reply next week to see what they can arrange and then will be able to publish full details and options as well as give out booking forms. If you still want to come along then we have already opened an account for deposits of £150 per person payable to P.A. Pearson. In the light of my move to Birkenhead, I asked Bishop Brian about the forthcoming pilgrimage and he saw no reason why I could not continue with the plans

Anybody ready for a walk?

posted 19 Jul 2009 03:39 by Tony Griffiths

Next Saturday, 25th July, Joe and Marion Stefanazzi have organised a short walk around the lake at Ellesmere. Those interested to gather at the small kiosk by the Lake at 2pm and the stroll will be about an hour. This will be followed by refreshments at Moreton Park Garden Centre. All welcome!

Wine & Cheese and a Family Quiz

The social committee are looking to their next function. One idea is to have a Parish Picnic after the 11am mass on a Sunday in July. This would, of course, be dependent upon the weather so we might be able to have delightful afternoon with very little time for preparation. Watch this space.

We are now in a position to start receiving deposits for the pilgrimage. We are still to finalise dates and itinery but in order that the payment could be spread over a long time a deposit of £150 per person can now be paid. Please write a cheque for the amount payable to P.A. Pearson. These will be held in a special account until such time as they are needed. Any interest will be divided among the group.

Apologies to regular visitors to our site for the recent lack of updates.  This has been due to the webmaster having to have and recover from major surgery.  He is now recovering well so normal service will be resumed.
